Microsoft has announced an upcoming feature that will allow Xbox Series X/S players to literally download more storage space for their consoles, marking a significant leap forward in gaming technology.

The Xbox Update Preview patch notes for version 2502.250120-2200 have revealed that Xbox owners will soon be able to expand their available storage by utilizing external USB drives larger than 16TB.
According to the patch notes, “We are enabling support for external USB drives larger than 16TB, so you can ensure your favorite games are always ready to play!”
For drives over 16TB, the system will format them into multiple partitions to use all the available space for games and apps. Each partition will show up as a separate device in the storage list.
While this update opens up the potential for adding over 80TB of storage through a single external drive, you’ll need a drive that exceeds 16TB to make the most of this feature.
If you already have a large drive, you'll need to reformat it to use this new capability, meaning you’ll likely have to redownload your games after reformatting—so hopefully, you’ve got a speedy internet connection!
The update is currently available to Xbox’s Alpha Skip-Ahead Ring members, and there’s no word yet on when it will roll out to the public. We’ll be sure to update you once the feature becomes widely available.
